These recorders produce gliding tones, or glissandos, in which the tones change gradually. This is accomplished by sliding the hand up and down the elongated openings in the side of the instrument. These recorders may have been inspired by Leonardo’s knowledge of the anatomy of the larynx and trachea. (See also  Woodwind Keys.)
